Factors influencing multi-modal public transport use

The research aimed to:

  • understand what affects people’s transport choices for journeys where rail might be part of the trip

  • explore how people currently experience multi-modal journeys

  • find out what changes might encourage more people to use them

Research took place between February and March 2025 and engaged a total of 67 participants via:

  • an online community

  • in-depth interviews

  • focus groups

This report shares findings from a study commissioned by the Department for Transport. It looks at what helps or stops people from using more than one type of public transport in a single journey.
